Salon Lulu is a multidisciplinary event series hosted by NYC-based indie-dance artist Lulu Lewis. The salon brings together artists and projects from every medium to create inspiring happenings influenced by events regularly held in NYC during the 1970s & 1980s at locations like The Factory, The Mudd Club, lofts, wild dinner parties and any location that created spaces for artists & intellectuals to express themselves.
Bobby Grossman & Low Fidelity - Artist and photographer Bobby Grossman will show photos from his new book Low Fidelity. Bobby Grossman arrived in New York in 1976 after receiving a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) where he studied alongside friends Chris Frantz and David Byrne of Talking Heads. His first job was assisting Richard Bernstein, the artist responsible for the striking covers for Andy Warhol’s Interview magazine. Bernstein’s studio, located at the legendary Chelsea Hotel, is where Grossman found himself at ground zero in the early days of Punk and the downtown art scene which he photographed extensively.
Lulu Lewis Performance - Lulu Lewis is the creation of partners Dylan Hundley & Pablo Martin. Their 2022 release Dyscopia was named #1 album of the year by WFMU’s Evan Davies as was their 2023 release Destroy All Data. They love disco, punk plus all the “waves”and have released two full length LP's, multiple EP’s & singles. They perform regularly locally and regionally. Before moving to music, Dylan spent many years in film as an actor & producer. Most notably, she played the role of Sally Fowler in Whit Stillman’s iconic film Metropolitan. Pablo Martin’s additional credits include lead guitar in the Tom Tom Club and co-creator of The Du-Rites.
Metropolitan Screening - is a 1990 American romantic comedy-drama film produced, written and directed by Whit Stillman, in his feature directorial debut. The film concerns the lives of a group of wealthy young socialites during debutante season in Manhattan. In addition to some of their debutante parties, it covers their frequent informal after-hours gatherings at a friend's Upper East Side apartment, where they discuss life, philosophy and their fate; form attachments, romances and intrigues; and react to an interesting but less well-to-do newcomer. Metropolitan was nominated for Best Original Screenplay at the 63rd Academy Awards.
This event is ticketed. There will be goodie bags including signed cards from Bobby Grossman of his iconic images, champagne for all and surprises!
